Update: 1010 WINS Anchor Changes

Here’s a follow-up to a story we first reported last week.

Beginning on Monday, 1010 WINS started rotating two anchors every 30 minutes throughout the day, instead of three anchors in 20-minute intervals—a staple for decades.

A source with knowledge of the changes tells FishbowlNY that the all-news station is also tweaking the editor shift. WINS is actually increasing editors daily from three to four.

The editor shifts will correspond to the new anchor shifts.

  • Morning drive — 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. (Lee Harris and Judy DeAngelis)
  • Midday — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Larry Kanter and Sandi Klein)
  • Afternoon drive — 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  (Brian Carey and Lori Madden)

Despite the anchors now having shortened on-air shifts, the source says they will remain full time.

“[They] will still be working eight-hour days, with more time during their shifts being dedicated to show prep and other behind the scenes work.”

An AFTRA representative confirms to FishbowlNY that the WINS anchors are keeping their full-time status.

A former WINS employee, who asked to remain anonymous, tells FishbowlNY, “The station’s ratings aren’t where the company would like to see them. So clearly they’re making moves in an attempt that they think will boost listenership.”

FishbowlNY was not privy to a breakdown of the ratings by daypart. However, analysis over the last three months shows WINS with .7 gains to a 3.9 (tying for seventh place) in the overall Arbitron numbers.
