The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: White House Correspondents’ 2014

Capitol File party
Capitol File party

It’s now been 24 hours since I’ve done anything White House Correspondents related, and I’m still exhausted. Fifteen parties over the course of three days! This must be what it’s like to climb Mount Everest or win an Iron Man competition…

Sort of.

While we didn’t make it to all the various WHCD2k14 shindigs, we made it to most. Our personal highlight of the weekend? Definitely when “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara did a complete about-face when asked if she would take a picture of us with her hot boyfriend. Runner up – “Glee’s” Matthew Morrison’s “sex eyes.”

Check out our party-by-party run down, after the jump…

20140501_192720Welcome to Washington: A Salute to Women in Journalism
At the home of Story Partners’ Gloria Dittus and hosted by NBC’s Betsy Fischer Martin, Washingtonian’s Cathy Merrill Williams, CNN’s Dana Bash, CBS’s Jan Crawford and the New Republic’s Julia Ioffe.
A beautiful venue, intimate guest list, delicious food, and a purpose directly related to the White House Correspondents’ Association, “Welcome to Washington” was my 2nd favorite event of the weekend.

The Spin Room with Rock the Vote
Hosted at Napoleon’s art gallery, Heirarchy
The Spin Room was a full-on rage fest. An extreme way to start 72 hours of parties on parties, but fun for the generally younger crowd in attendance.

People and TIME’s Annual Cocktail Party

Hosted at the St. Regis
High-level attendees and celebrities including Scandal’s Scott Foley, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Katharine McPhee.
Interesting Bloody Mary bar and champagne flowing.
Supposedly an awesome gift bag, which wasn’t being handed out until 7:45 (we had to depart at 7:15). #buzzkill

The Hill
and Entertainment Tonight Celebrate The White House Correspondents’ Dinner Weekend
Hosted at the Canadian Embassy
Gorgeous dance floor and patio overlooking a star-studded red carpet.

Capitol File
 and the Entertainment Software Association

Hosted at the home of British Ambassador to the United States Sir Peter Westmacott and wife Lady Susie Westmacott
My favorite event of the entire weekend. Gorgeous venue with indoor and outdoor space, each with a different feel – the inside more club-like and the outside patio spilling into the home’s garden. “House of Cards” cast in attendance, including Robin Wright (looking like a boss) chumming it up with Capitol File’s editor Elizabeth Thorp.

The New Yorker
 with Editor David Remnick
Not invited.

Google-Netflix White House Correspondents’ Party

Hosted at the US Institute of Peace
A star studded red carpet with the casts of “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black” -and also that Kid President kid from the Youtubes.
Its expansive outdoor patio boasted an “engineer your own liquid nitrogen ice cream” bar…

ABC News, Fusion, and Noticias Univision Host Fonseca

Hosted at LOOK on K Street
Guests dancing (and occasionally bumping into you) to the music of Grammy winner Fonseca.
Every table featured copies of the latest issue of Washington Life, although the magazine was not an event sponsor. Weird how that happened…

laniLMT Inc. Presents Michelle Branch with Rock The Vote

Hosted at the home of Lani Hay, president & CEO of LMT Inc.
Benefiting Rock the Vote.
Heavy pours of Moet & Chandon.
An acoustic performance by Michelle Branch.

2.0 The New Media Party – The Next Generation of Hollywood, Tech, and Media

Hosted at Carnegie Library by StartUp RockOn
My most highly anticipated event of the evening because of the interactive badge that set off activations including mini talking robots and suspended spheres over the dance floor enabling guests to download music of the live entertainment.

Members of Pussy Riot at the Annual Garden Brunch

2014 Annual Garden Brunch
Hosted at the R Street mansion formerly owned by The Washington Post’s Katherine Graham by Tammy Haddad and Ted Greenberg, Kevin Sheekey, Hilary Rosen, Steve and Jean CaseMark Ein, Alex Castellanos, Anita Dunn, Bill Knapp, Steve McMahon, David Adler and Franco Nuschese.
Honoring the work of Dog Tag Bakery and Blue Star Families.
Lots of great red carpet conversation with cast members from “Scandal,” “House of Cards,” and “Glee,” former ‘N Sync-er JC Chasez and Katharine McPhee.

Yahoo News & ABC News’ White House Correspondents’ Cocktail Reception
Hosted in the Washington Hilton’s Columbia Room
Club-like music and lighting.
Likely the last stop for many before heading to the dinner.

White House Correspondents’ Cocktail Reception

Hosted on the Washington Hilton Patio by CBS News, Atlantic Media, The Atlantic, and National Journal
A quick rain threatened the gathering (which was tented), but came and left within in a minute.
Bars closed at 7 although many guests stayed past 7:45.

Bow Ties & Burgers In DC!
Hosted at Jack Rose Dining Salon by BuzzFeed and Facebook and presented by Geico.
BT&B was by far the most fun party of the weekend.
Loud music, a photo booth with props by Facebook & BuzzFeed, food served late into the evening, and anything you wanted from the bar.

Bloomberg and Vanity Fair Cocktail Reception
Not invited.

MSNBC’s White House Correspondents Dinner After Party
Hosted at the National Building Museum
Delicious food stations by four of Bravo’s “Top Chef” winners – Hung HuynhKevin SbragaKristen Kish and Nicholas Elmi.
After three days of 14 other events, some might call this an unnecessary end to a crazy weekend.

Allbritton Garden Brunch
Not invited.
