Target’s Black Friday Ads Still Zany

Retailer unveils 'Deals Duet,' replacing Maria Bamford character

Target today posted a pair of 30-second Black Friday spots on its blog, unveiling the retailer's new "Deals Duet" characters that are replacing comedian Maria Bamford's fictional personalities, "Crazy Target Lady" and "Christmas Champ," after a two-year run.

The Deals Duet players sing quirky versions of holidays songs, Deck The Halls and Do You Hear What I Hear, supplanting the traditional lyrics with words about Black Friday shopping. In one spot, dubbed "Let's Go Together," they carol around unsuspecting high-schoolers who are texting on their cellphones. The duo acts similarly in the other commercial, called "Gifts For You, Gifts For Me," though in this one they're in the midst of a young woman going through Target Black Friday ads in a newspaper circular.

Adweek also spotted Black Friday ads from Target on Facebook today, as various brands' holiday campaigns are now in full-launch mode.

Walmart sent out an email on Sunday (Nov. 11), including localized landing pages that announced Black Friday sale this year will begin at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving (Nov. 22). Sister brand Sam's Club ran Promoted Tweets (see ad below the videos) today for the "Black Friday" hashtag.
