Study: Magazine Launches Slightly Outpace Closings in First Half of 2010

The birth rate among magazines has slightly outpaced the death rate in the first six months of 2010, according to a recent study by research group MediaFinder, which monitors periodicals in the U.S. and Canada.

The 87 magazine closures in the first half of this year marks a sharp decrease from the 279-magazine massacre that occurred in the same period a year ago, MediaFinder said. Unfortunately for the industry, the rate of magazine launches also fell considerably, to 90 from 187 over the same interval.
