As Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan finished answering a question Thursday at the vice presidential debate about the Romney campaign’s critique of the Obama administration’s response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, vice president Joe Biden interjected, telling Ryan, “With all due respect, that’s a bunch of malarkey.” Twitter immediately went wild, with “malarkey,” — and variations of the word’s spelling — being mentioned nearly 30,000 times in one minute, and the Obama campaign leveraged the hashtag, buying advertisements for the Twitter search term “#malarkey.” Twitter Blog In total, 4 million tweets were sent about the debate, 3.5 million of which occurred during the 92 minutes of live action. Top tweets per minute were, Biden saying, “Now you’re Jack Kennedy?” (58,275 TPM); Ryan saying, “They got caught with their hand in the cookie jar turning Medicare into a piggy bank for Obamacare” (55,540 TPM); and Biden discussing the timeline for leaving Afghanistan (54,944 TPM). When he wasn’t laughing, Biden sounded a like a belligerent old man; Ryan sipped from a cup and looked like a beleaguered altar boy. Fair or not, those were just two characterizations of Thursday’s vice presidential debate on Twitter, where a Greek chorus of jokesters kept up a witty commentary throughout the 90-minute event. VentureBeat The debate was aired before Xbox Live users, who were polled as they listened to the debate on the service on the Xbox 360 video game console. Biden was overwhelmingly viewed by swing voters as being more truthful, garnering 72.2 percent of the favor of undecided respondents. About 70.1 percent of undecided voters said they did not consider a candidate’s religion when deciding whom to vote for. Approximately 54 percent of undecided voters felt that Biden is better prepared to step in as president if needed, compared to 21 percent for Ryan. Tumblr has released a dedicated iOS app for creating what it calls Photosets — groups of pictures The Photoset app is separate from the main Tumblr app, similar to the way Facebook built specialized apps for photos and messaging. VentureBeat Photoset allows the iOS owner to easily snap or add a bunch of photos to a set, alter the layout of the shots, append a caption and upload and share the high-resolution sets publicly to followers or privately to friends. You can use the standalone, photo-only application with or without a Tumblr blog. The Next Web Tumblr founder David Karp has always pushed the platform for creatives, and with the release of Photoset, there’s reason to believe that more apps for post creation may also be on the way. It’s important to note, however, that this app is a tool, not a network, and that keeps it (and others which may follow it) from competing with Tumblr’s core service.

Facebook’s Mobile Advertising Interface Was Built by Interns (AllFacebook)
Peter Cottle, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, and future Facebook engineer, reflected on his internship with the social network, writing that himself and another intern were responsible for most of the work on the site’s first mobile advertising interface. Even Cottle, who will join Facebook full-time next spring, admitted that he didn’t expect to make much of an impact when he began his internship.

Tumblr Reinstates Predditors, the Controversial Blog Publishing Personal Info About Redditors Behind Creepshots (BetaBeat)
The coming Internet war may be heating up with the news that Tumblr has decided to reinstate Predditors, a blog run by a 25-year-old female Redditor that publishes the publicly available personal information of users who post photos of women without their consent on the subreddit page, creepshots. A spokesman for Tumblr told Betabeat, “This blog was mistakenly suspended under the impression that it was revealing private, rather than publicly-available, information. We are restoring the blog.”

Twitter Opens New Office in Korea (AllTwitter)
Twitter has just announced that they’re opening a Korean office to promote localized features and partnerships with key companies. The plan is for Twitter to use this new office to extend partnership agreements with handset manufacturers such as Samsung and LG, as well as mobile operators, media companies and even celebrities – so maybe we will see a Gangnam Style Twitter theme in the future.

After breaking new media ground with products like Tumblr and Instapaper, Marco Arment is turning his attention to a more conventional publishing format — the magazine. Launched Thursday in iTunes, Arment’s “The Magazine” will showcase top technology writers and ideas, offering four articles every two weeks.
