‘Rolling Stone’ and Garnier Let Readers Vote for ‘Women Who Rock’

Readers will choose the issue's back cover

Ever thought you should be able to choose the artists featured in Rolling Stone? This summer, the music magazine is letting readers do just that—at least, they’ll have some say in who gets to be on the back cover.

In preparation for Rolling Stone’s “Women Who Rock” issue, which hits newsstands in late September, the magazine has partnered with Garnier Fructis hair care to have readers vote for up-and-coming female artists to be featured on the back cover. Of the six finalists—Delta Rae, Dev, Karmin, Rita Ora, Rye Rye and Sleeper Agent—the top two fan favorites will get to play on stage at the Rolling Stone Rock Room at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago on Aug. 3 and 4 and their performances posted on the magazine’s website before one is voted the winner.

This isn’t the first time that Rolling Stone has let readers choose the cover. Last summer, the magazine ran a contest in which 16 unsigned bands vied for a cover spot and record deal. This year’s crop isn’t quite as fresh-faced; Karmin performed on Saturday Night Live this past season, while Rita Ora was already signed by Jay-Z to his record label.

This time around, Rolling Stone will promote the contest on multiple platforms throughout the summer, introducing the finalists in the print magazine and on Rollingstone.com. The contestants will also receive some face time in Wenner Media sister publication Us Weekly, in a special “Rock Your Style” section of the magazine and on UsMagazine.com. Garnier will style the artists and help create their cover look.
