Rochester Radio Duo Bounced for Reprehensible Transgender Comments

The action in this case was even swifter than the NBA’s response to Donald Sterling.

In the space of just 24 hours, a petition to have a pair of Rochester radio hosts removed has quickly zoomed past its signature goal and the station in question, WBZA, has followed the suspension of its morning hosts with firing. From a report by the Syracuse Post-Standard ‘s Geoff Herbert:

Kimberly and Beck, hosts of The Breakfast Buzz on 98.9 The Buzz, came under fire Wednesday after a 12-minute segment about the city of Rochester’s [January 1, 2015] plan to extend health coverage to employees for gender reassignment surgery.

“The services that will be paid for under the new coverage: gender reassignment surgery, psychological counseling, because you’re probably a nut job to begin with,” Kimberly said.

The DJs played a clip of Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady,” compared gender non-conforming issues to a woman who wants a “boob job” for her mental health, and mocked a female listener who called in to complain they were being disrespectful. “Thank you, sir,” they replied with a laugh.

Per the petition by Rochester resident John Lukach, co-host Kimberly followed this hateful Wednesday bit with a freedom-of-speech defense on Twitter.
