Reuters Journalist Hiro Muramoto Killed Amidst Bangkok Protests

muramoto_reuters_4.12.10.jpgReuters television cameraman Hiro Muramoto was shot and killed on Saturday while covering the ongoing struggles between Thai military troops and anti-government protesters in the country’s capital. Soldiers fired on the crowd with rubber bullets and tear gas, the result, according to an army spokesman, of protesters throwing gas bombs and grenades at the troops.

Muramoto arrived at Klang Hospital without a pulse, doctors saying a bullet had hit him in the chest, exiting through his back. His camera was eventually returned to Reuters by protesters, along with about seven minutes of footage from the day’s protests.

Twelve people died in the attack and more than 500 were wounded.

Muramoto leaves behind a wife and two children, as well as many grief-stricken colleagues from his more than 15 years of reporting for Reuters.
