NBC’s Deborah Turness Reportedly Considered Jon Stewart as ‘Meet The Press’ Moderator

jonstewartBefore deciding on Chuck Todd to replace David Gregory as moderator of “Meet the Press,” NBC News president Deborah Turness apparently considered Jon Stewart.

New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman cited three unnamed senior television sources, with one saying that NBC was “ready to back the Brink’s truck up,” in the network’s effort to do “anything” to get the host of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” to agree.

Sherman writes:

“It makes sense that NBC would make a run at Stewart. The comedian-cum-media-critic possesses something that broadcast executives covet: a loyal, young audience. And it’s not the first time NBC tried recruiting him. According to sources, NBC Entertainment courted Stewart several years ago for a 10 p.m. variety show (the slot ultimately went to Jay Leno).”

On Wednesday, Todd poked fun at the rumors on Twitter, tweeting a combination of his program’s closing line and a popular segment from Stewart’s program.
