Promotions, Hires, and More at WaPo

The WaPo newsroom shuffle continues. Here are the latest moves from inside 1150 15th St. NW:

Roz Helderman will move to the political investigations and enterprise team on National. She has been with the paper since 2001, starting out at as reporter in Loudon County. In 2009, she covered the campaign for governor in Virginia and then spent a year-and-a-half in Richmond as a state politics reporter. In 2011, she became a Congressional correspondent and covered the 2012 presidential election. Her reporting also helped lead to a federal indictment of former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, who will face trial this summer.

Nia-Malika Henderson has moved to a new role as senior writer for She The People, where she will focus on women in the midterms. Nia just finished a run as host of “On Background,” a daily show on Post TV. She joined WaPo in 2010, and covered many of the candidates in the Republican primary during the last presidential election. She is also a frequent contributor to the political talk shows on network and cable television.

Ben Chartoff has started as the first ever Knight-Mozilla open news fellow. The fellowship program places talented developers in newsrooms around the world. Ben joins WaPo from the Sunlight Foundation where he analyzed and visualized data. He will have free reign to work on “anything and everything,” though he specializes in working with and visualizing data.

And finally, Dee Swann has been promoted to Senior Photo Editor for Digital Engagement.  Dee will manage all digital photography across platforms. She began her career at WaPo in 1997 as a photo editing intern at In 2004, she was named deputy managing editor of multimedia and in 2009, she played a key role in merging the visual digital staffs and began her role as multimedia editor managing the digital photo team. She will be tasked with providing visual content to accompany all new digital projects and will continue to be the point person for photo rights management.
