Rachel Martin has been named to replace Renee Montagne as host of NPR flagship show Morning Edition, joining co-hosts Steve Inskeep and David Greene when Montagne takes on a new role as special correspondent in November.

Greene will maintain Morning Edition’s bi-coastal presence by moving to the NPR West office in Culver City, Calif., where Montagne broadcasts from, at the beginning of next year.

Martin is currently the host of Weekend Edition Sunday, and Lulu Garcia-Navarro, NPR’s South America correspondent, has been named to take Martin’s place as Sunday host, a role she’ll take on beginning in January.

“Rachel, Lulu and David share similar qualities,” said Christopher Turpin, vp for news and operations, in a statement. “They are dynamic journalists, who are terrifically good at live radio, love being out on the road reporting and have a knack for finding stories that reflect the complexity of the world we live in. Our belief is these changes will help us maintain the extraordinary audience growth we have seen over the past year.”

In a conversation with Washingtonian about plans for her new role, Martin said, “I’ve been craving to get some of those newsmaker interviews and to do some live stuff. I think what I can bring is experience in doing very deep-dive, personal conversations to a weekday audience that craves that kind of conversation.”
