New York Giants NFC Championship Thriller Wins the Week

Could it be anything else? The New York Giants riveting overtime NFC Championship victory earned Big Blue a return trip to the Super Bowl. As expected, the game broadcast by Fox, was number one for the week, according to Nielsen. Sunday’s prime time matchup in San Francisco drew an estimated 5.4 million fans to WNYW/Channel 5 with a 27.8 rating.

The post-game show primarily from the Giants locker room won second-place honors with 3.2 million viewers and a 16.7 rating. The only “hurt” Fox got Sunday night was at the hands American Idol. It’s 11th season began last week, but a special edition followed the Giants win. Idol started at 10:58 p.m., clearly an effort to register in the prime time ratings. It didn’t.

But the talent juggernaut did just fine for its season premieres Wednesday and Thursday. The two-hour opening night auditions were third (1.6 million/8.3), while the next evening settled in at number four (1.2 million/6.2).

Idol faithful aren’t the only happy campers that the show is back. WNYW is delighted to have its top lead-in for the 10 p.m. newscast. The Idol debut yielded a Top 30 appearance for the Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexander broadcast (541,000/2.8).
