New Media Journalism 101: Don't Get in a Twitter Flamewar with Sarah Silverman*

Over the weekend, in an apparent nod to the recent Sarah Palin controversy, comic Sarah Silverman produced some cringe-worthy moments during a performance at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, where she shocked the crowd by uttering the word “retarded” over and over and over again. Though Silverman apparently won the crowd over, receiving a standing ovation at the end of her performance, TED organizer Chris Anderson felt the need to voice his “retarded” disapproval over the Internet via Twitter.

“I know I shouldn’t say this about one of my speakers, but I thought Sarah Silverman was god awful…”

As one of the event’s organizers, Anderson should have known all about Silverman’s proclivity for provocation.
