Meta-Trend: Covering China’s Coverage of the Earthquakes

Admittedly, we’re one of the last venues that has a right to get uppity about meta media — it pays our rent — but the ink spilled in examining China’s media coverage of the recent earthquake borders on absurd.

Outlets from the AP (“China media unusually aggressive in covering quake” to the Australian Broadcasting Company (“Quake coverage ‘testing China’s media credibility’“) felt the need to weigh in on the subject. The Chinese media got into the act as well, commenting on the world media’s coverage of China’s response.

We understand the Olympics are approaching and we’re all worried about media coverage and human rights violations and China in general, but isn’t the story here the destruction and the deaths caused by the earthquakes, not how it was covered?
