LA Weekly’s Christine Pelisek broke the story about serial killer “Grim Sleeper” living and killing among us back in 2008. She’s been following up ever since, and was profiled in Newsweek for her efforts. But Pelisek was vacationing in Canada when the AP broke the story that a suspect had been arrested in the “Grim Sleeper” serial murder case. As a reporter, what do you do when a story you’ve been all over breaks when you’re out of town…in Canada no less?
Says Pelisek: “I made a bunch of phone calls. The usual.”
Wait, they have phones in Canada? We thought it was just moose and hockey haircuts up there. Anyway, the always humble Pelisek nailed the story behind the story of the Grim Sleeper arrest. And though she didn’t have much to say about her international reporting, she was definitely excited the man she’d been investigating for the better part of two years had finally been nabbed.
“I can’t believe he has been caught. I wasn’t sure it would ever happen. But the detectives always told me that he would be caught through DNA. And he was. I just thought it would take a little longer. And I was hoping I would be in town when it happened!!!”
