Journal Register Staffers Get Bonuses

The Journal Register company is handing out one extra week’s pay to its staffers this week after the company hit its profit goals, CEO John Paton announced today.

“Not bad for a bankrupt, beat up old newspaper company people had written off as dead in 2009,” he wrote.

This is the company that has opened the newsrooms of some of its papers so the public can participate in the newsgathering process, has embraced social media and crowdsourcing, and purchased 1,000 Flip cams for staffers companywide. It’s the company behind the Ben Franklin project and Idea Lab. The company hit over $41 million in profit in 2010, more than a million more than the company’s goal of $40 million.

Congratulations, guys.
