H&M Gets Its Rei: Fast Fashion Giant to Collaborate with Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons for H&M? Hey, it worked for Viktor & Rolf. Swedish fast fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) announced today that they’ve signed up Commes des Garçons founder and head designer Rei Kawakubo to create a guest designer collection. Arriving on H&M store shelves this fall, the collection will encompass clothing for women and men, with some pieces for children too. Accessories and an exclusive unisex fragrance will also be included in the collection.

“I have always been interested in the balance between creation and business,” said Kawakubo in the H&M press release. “It is a dilemma, although for me creation has always been the first priority. It is a fascinating challenge to work with H&M since it is a chance to take the dilemma to its extreme, and try to solve it.”

According to H&M creator advisor (and former design director) Margareta van den Bosch, Kawakubo “has been at the top of [H&M’s guest designer] wish list for a long time….We have tremendous respect for Kawakubo’s fashion philosophy of questioning fashion’s ingrained patterns, and admire her artistic approach to design.” The collection will be launched in early November at the opening of Japan’s second store in Tokyo before making its way to other markets (H&M operates stores in a whopping 28 countries).
