Fox 5 DC Live Concert Series Debuts With Sound of the City

Local talent plays in Farragut Square park three Fridays in a row.

The band that kicks off Fox 5’s debut live concert series in Farragut Square park this morning is Sound of the City, an ensemble rooted in soul, blending in other influences. The city in question is D.C., specifically, and that’s the point. This band, and the ones that will follow on the next two Fridays, are all local D.C. bands by design.

“It’s great when we get an opportunity to host national bands and singers in our studio who are in town promoting their shows, but in this case, we wanted to give local bands a platform to show off their sounds,” Margie Ruttenberg, director of news and partnerships for Fox 5 WTTG, tells FishbowlDC.

Ruttenberg was responsible for planning the series, which grew out of a smaller scale event Fox 5 put on in October featuring the band Cover Drive, who played, as Ruttenberg explains, “outside of Metro Center on a flatbed truck from Easterns’ Automotive [who are also the sponsors of this series, dubbed #fox5rocks]. We broadcasted and streamed the performance live during Good Day DC. It was a small event but we thought we could do it bigger and better.”

A permit and one stage with sound and lighting set up later, Fox 5 is doing just that. Sound of the City will play live beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Good Day DC will broadcast parts of the concert at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET and will broadcast a longer set toward the end of the second hour. Holly Morris and Maureen Umeh host.

Next Friday will feature Secret Society, with Allison Seymour and Wisdom Martin hosting, and The Muddy Crows will close out the series the Friday after that, with Tucker Barnes and Erin Como as hosts.

As for whether this will be a one-off or recurring venture for the station, Ruttenberg tells us, “We’re glad to be first in the market to produce this kind of event and hope to continue it in the future.”
