Disney Going Bollywood

The Walt Disney company announced yesterday that it was stepping up efforts to break into the Bollywood market. The Hindustan Times is reporting that Disney has plans to develop 14 new family friendly films in India. The first, a South Indian Telugu language adventure film, is scheduled for release in January 2011.

Disney arguably feels emboldened after its 2008 Hindi animated feature “Roadside Romeo”, gave the company its biggest opening weekend in India.

But, notes Brett Lang at The Wrap, Roadside Romeo only made $1.9 million at the box office.

And, as Lang puts it, “Corpses in Hollywood’s India efforts far outweigh the healthy specimens.”
