Crimes Against Urbanity (San Francisco Edition)

IMG_2224.jpgJust in case someone out there is preparing what they feel is a bulletproof argument against claims that the city of San Francisco is twee and provincial, I present to you: Cupid’s Span. Are they kidding? Holy smokes, this is some ugly shit. Sure warm and fuzzy has a place in the public realm (sometimes and for God’s sake sparingly) but give me some Tom Otterness, not this saccharine Disney-fied nonsense.

The information provided by the artists (Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen) on their website does little to redeem the, um, sculpture. Amongst a bunch of woo-woo touchy feely nonsense about all the lofty idealogical accomplishments achieved with their project is this gem:

Arriving at San Francisco airport, one is greeted with a recording by Mayor Willie Brown which extols the city as a place with “heart.” Countless songs and stories celebrate San Francisco as the realm of Love. It therefore seems fitting to embed the arrow of Cupid in its ground.

Riiiiight, it all makes absolutely perfect sense.
