Seated at the power table at Last Thursday’s Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Gold Medal Gala on Park Avenue was Her Majesty The Queen of Spain, Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, Bill Clinton, Oscar de la Renta and former President Bill Clinton. President Clinton and Penelope Cruz were there to receive the Institute’s 2007 Gold Medals for their contributions in bettering Spanish-American relations. From our favorite social chronicler David Patrick Columbia in NewYorkSocialDiary:

”Mr. Clinton was seated next to the Queen of Spain, on her right; and Mr. de la Renta was on her left. To the left of Mr. de la Renta was Ms. Cruz, and to right of Mr. Clinton was Anna Wintour, the winsome-when-she-wants-to-be editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine.

More after the jump …

”The real highlight of the evening, however, was the people watching, and most specifically the people who were seated near the Queen. And the real real highlight for many of the guests was watching the former President. for eventually he forsook the editor of Vogue as a dinner partner, and switched his seat with Mr. de la R so that he could be seated next to the movie star. Well, what would you do in his shoes?”

From People Magazine:

”’I was trying to figure out exactly why I would receive this award tonight,”‘Clinton said after being presented with a medallion from Spain’s Queen Sofia. ‘It may be because even though I’m not of Spanish descent, I’ve seen every one of Penelope Cruz’s movies — and I liked them all.”

”For her part, Cruz, who was honored for her work in Spanish cinema, called the former commander-in-chief ‘one of my personal heroes.”’
