Blade, Post-Gazette Ax D.C. Bureaus

Block Communications, which owns the Toledo Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has announced that it will closing its Washington bureau in the National Press Club, possibly as soon as the next two weeks.

Even while company chairman Allan Block promised, “We will have a presence in Washington,” it appears that the five-person bureau, which reported for both papers, including bureau heavies Michael McGough and Ann McFeatters, will be reduced to a single reporter.

Maeve Reston, who covers Capitol Hill and works out of the congressional press galleries, will continue her reporting for both papers, but the other reporters–all of them non-Guild staff–will be laid off.
