Are We Over Our Car Fetish? NY Times Can't Decide
From today’s New York Times:
Cellphones are to Romans what cars are to Angelinos: status symbols.
What? Say what? Less than a month ago, I learned from Lynn Hirschberg’s piece in the Style Magazine supplement that here in LA, wristwatches have replaced cars as status symbols.
I’m so confused. And I need to know what the status symbol here is before I, you know, lose all my status.
Or maybe life in LA isn’t as one-dimensional as the NYT often so glibly depicts it?
(As it happens, I have often felt that in my east-coasty/Ivy Leaguey LA social world, the real, unspoken status symbol is the blue NYT home-delivery wrapper, which I sometimes wear to parties as a cummerbund.
