Alec Russell is the <em>Financial Times</em>' Comment and Analysis Editor

Add another editorial shift to the already substantial personnel moves over at the Financial Times. The paper announced today that it has moved world news editor Alec Russell to the position of comment and analysis editor. He replaces Caroline Daniel, who as we learned earlier will assume the role of Weekend FT editor. Russell is now charged with editing the FT's features pages, which include the op-ed page and Business Life. He has previously served the FT as Johannesburg bureau chief. He's covered the end of apartheid, the Rwanda genocide and the Croatian and Bosnian wars, among other world events. Press release after the jump. The Financial Times has today appointed Alec Russell comment and analysis editor. Russell, who was previously world news editor, is replacing Caroline Daniel who is taking up the post of Weekend FT editor. In his new role Russell will be responsible for editing the features pages, including the op-ed page and Business Life. He will shortly be joined by James Crabtree, deputy editor of Prospect, who joins the FT next month as comment editor. Prior to his post as world news editor, Russell was the Financial Times Johannesburg bureau chief. He is the author of the widely acclaimed book After Mandela (2009), which portrays South Africa under Thabo Mbeki. He has also written Prejudice and Plum Brandy (1993) and Big Men, Little People: The Leaders Who Defined Africa (1999). In the 1990s Russell covered the end of apartheid, the election of the African National Congress, the genocide in Rwanda and the fall of the veteran Zairean dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. He was also stationed in Bucharest from the Romanian revolution until 1993, covering the Croatian and Bosnian wars, the fall of the Soviet Union and the Kurdish exodus from northern Iraq. Russell's work has earned him a 2004 UK Press Gazette award for coverage of the Iraq War. He was highly commended in the 1992 UK Press Gazette awards for coverage of the Croatian war, and in the 1991 awards for his coverage of the Romanian revolution. He won an award in 2007 for Business Feature about Africa.
