Acer eBook Reader Could Be a Dark Horse

The thought of yet another manufacturer joining the increasingly crowded ebook reader race is almost laughable. There are only two companies whose announcements would not make me laugh. One is Apple. The other is…

Acer to Join Apple, Amazon in Apps, E-Book Markets (Update1)

Acer is not only the second largest computer vendor (behind HP), it also came out of nowhere to overtake netbook pioneer Asus in the netbook space after a relatively late start in the summer of 2008. So, it would not surprise me if Acer is also able to navigate the crowded ebook reader device market to produce a winner even though they will have a super late start with a summer 2010 introduction.

The big hurdle Acer faces this time out of their late gate, however, is Apple and whatever it introduces tomorrow (Jan. 27).

The other potential spoiler may be Microsoft, believe it or not. They had a mobile ebook reader app in the form of Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC a decade ago. While they were unable to capitalize on this back then, they might surprise us in the Windows Mobile 7 timeframe. There’s been hints of a Microsoft Reader revival on various parts of Microsoft’s website. Perhaps the time for a full scale relaunch is close.
