Architectural Digest’s style director Jane Keltner de Valle may win the prize for 2016’s most charming full disclosure. Her insider’s statement comes at the very top of her latest “Celebrity Homes” piece:
Of the many hats fashion designer Jason Wu wears, that of chef ranks among the highest to his close friends, myself included. He entertains at home often, and with a casual, confident ease. While his husband, Gustavo Rangel, serves as official bartender, Jason stations himself behind the island of their open kitchen, sometimes recruiting his guests to assist with small tasks. The dinners are typically buffet and always low-key. He even welcomes children (my toddler son is a regular, with the wreckage to prove it—a chipped stool here, a broken dish there).
Only this time, the chef was teen sensation Flynn McGarry, chosen by Wu to help both house-warm a new Tribeca apartment and celebrate Wu and Rangel’s 10th wedding anniversary.
De Valle touches on the prodigious coverage given to L.A. native McGarry, which encompasses a 2014 cover story in The New York Times Magazine. Her work colleague, editor in chief Amy Astley, was also among the dinner guests, as were the “two André’s.”
The eight courses cooked by McGarry included aged beets with bordelaise. De Valle ends her it’s-a-ridiculously-wonderful-life summary of the Wednesdeay soiree with Wu’s “Top 5 Entertaining Rules.”
