Y&R to Present Gore at Cannes

NEW YORK WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam will host former U.S. Vice President Al Gore at its opening seminar during the 54th annual Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, said Hamish McLennan, Y&R’s global CEO.

Gore will speak on environmental issues and then take roughly 10 questions from the audience.

“Ultimately our clients, and the government and the business community, have to take a position,” said McLennan. “Media and advertising are all part of that community and this is a terrific way to elevate this issue.”

Gore and Y&R came together while working on branding and communications for the “S.O.S.” campaign for the Live Earth environmental consciousness concert scheduled for July 7, said McLennan.

Gore has been speaking around the world on the topic of global warming. Earlier this year, the film An Inconvenient Truth, which centers on his lectures, won an Academy Award.

“I don’t think it will be far off where certain types of pitches coming out of the government will say that the competing firms must be committed to carbon neutrality. It’s no different than how people are viewing diversity today,” said McLennan.

Asked if he foresaw a day when advertising agencies would decline to take on clients based on the size of their carbon footprints, McLennan said, “Time will tell, but I don’t see that on the horizon.”
