NEW YORK Dow Jones said it would offer readers of WSJ.com ad-supported software that will stream breaking news headlines on their computer desktops.

Called Desktop News Alerts, the software displays breaking news headlines in a small window that sits on computer screens. The headlines, which will be major news events and stock market swings, will link to full WSJ.com stories. Stories are only available to WSJ.com subscribers.

WSJ.com will intersperse the feeds with text advertisements from advertisers.
