Wheeler to Lead Ogilvy Digital Media Unit

NEW YORK WPP Group said Eric Wheeler would be the North American CEO of its newly formed digital media unit, Neo@Ogilvy.

Wheeler was already managing director of New York-based OgilvyInteractive. He will now oversee the integrated digital advertising programs that draw on OgilvyOne, OgilvyInteractive, Ogilvy & Mather and Neo@Ogilvy.

Wheeler has been with Ogilvy for three years. Prior to that, he was chief operating officer at Carat Interactive, part of the Aegis Group. He co-founded Lot21, a San Francisco Web shop, which was bought by Carat Interactive.

He will report to Neo@Ogilvy global CEO Nasreen Madhany.

Ogilvy formed the Web media unit following the breakup of its mOne partnership with MindShare last month. The three-year-old joint venture redistributed clients to their respective agencies. The move allows Ogilvy to more closely entwine media and creative when constructing interactive campaigns for clients, according to Madhany.

“Digital media is a growth business and one that must be closely aligned to the strategic and creative process,” she said in a statement.

In addition to Wheeler, Ogilvy said Ken Mandel, currently vice president of digital, would take on the role of Asia-Pacific CEO for Neo@Ogilvy. Ogilvy is in the process of deciding on a European CEO for Neo@Ogilvy.
