Verizon Is Giving Away Tons of Free Stuff on One of the Year’s Biggest Travel Days

‘Thanksgetting’ offers Wi-Fi, Amazon downloads

Even if you're excited to cram stuffing and turkey down your gullet tomorrow, traveling with the 47 million other people expected to do so this Thanksgiving can be exhausting.

Enter: Verizon. The company is trying to soothe consumers' travel woes with a lot of free stuff—including in-flight Wi-Fi and Amazon downloads, among other things—with what it's calling "Thanksgetting."

"Thanksgetting was created with the intent of helping make getting home for the holiday easier—and more enjoyable—for the millions of people who have to travel this week," said Kim Ancin, a Verizon spokeswoman, "[and] to help them get through what can sometimes feel like the most grueling travel day of the year." 

The campaign, created by R/GA, has Verizon giving away 1GB of free data and has partnered with Amazon, Lyft, Pandora, Apple's iTunes, Boingo and GoGo. 

The Amazon deal lets consumers download films like The End of the Tour and Divergent; television series like Party of Five, Rescue Me and Justified; music from artists like Meghan Trainor and Elvis; and short stories and essays from The Best American Series. 

While the initial iTunes deal—a $5 iTunes gift card—has already run out, the company is offering access to something called Pure Pop. Pandora, meanwhile, is offering a 30-day free trial. 

As for the GoGo and Boingo deals, consumers get free Wi-Fi in the airport or 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi on some airlines. The Lyft deal, for those who don't already have an account, provides $20 off a ride.
