Tolpin Resurfaces In Fla. At YPB&R

Former J. Walter Thompson worldwide creative director Larry Tolpin began his career as a copywriter for the Walt Disney Co. in 1975. Now, nearly 30 years later, Tolpin is close to the Mouse again—in a manner of speaking.

Last week, Tolpin joined independent Orlando, Fla., travel specialist Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown & Russell as president and chief creative officer. “We’re looking to build a creative reputation, and Larry comes with impeccable credentials,” said Tolpin’s new boss, chairman and CEO Peter Yesawich.

Most recently managing partner and CCO at Duncan & Associates in Los Angeles, Tolpin has won more than 200 awards for clients such as Anheuser-Busch, Apple, Jeep, Pepsi and Sony. The 49-year-old inherits a 40-person department and a two-fold mission: improve creative and broaden the roster. (The $150 million shop has Seminole Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos, Mexico Tourism Board and American Hotel and Motel Association, among others.)

Tolpin replaces co-CCOs Chris Aten and Keith Desomer, who left a year ago. For Tolpin, who was CEO of JWT West and later a regional creative director for Omnicom Group’s BBDO, the move to a small, low-profile shop in south Florida could be viewed as a step down. But he’s taking a cue from a cross-state success story for inspiration. “After seeing what Crispin, Porter + Bogusky has done, there’s no reason someone else can’t do it,” he said.
