Conventional wisdom says men are more intolerant than women. Not true. When it comes to sexual display in popular culture, at least, men are much more forbearing than women. A survey by Family Circle makes this clear. When respondents were asked about the “flesh-flaunting” outfit worn by Britney Spears on last year’s MTV awards telecast, 43 percent of women were very offended, vs. just 19 percent of men. A question about Jennifer Lopez’s “down-to-there dress” on the 1999 Grammy show drew a similar response, with 45 percent of women and 24 percent of men looking askance at it.
