TBWA\C\D Tops U.S. Entries in Press and Outdoor Finals

CANNES, FRANCE Fifty-seven out of 903 U.S. entries in the Press and Outdoor competition advanced to the finals at the International Advertising Festival here today. The shortlist of 793 ads from around the globe will compete for the top prizes, which will be presented at an awards ceremony here on Wednesday.

Omnicom Group’s TBWA\Chiat\Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., is under consideration for eight entries for Apple iPod, Sony PlayStation and the Ad Council. Two of the agency’s large-format iPod billboards, “Ginza Store” and “Trivision,” featuring silhouettes of people dancing, made it the finals, as well as three PlayStation ads, “Ferai,” “Undine” and “Wraith,” and three ads from the Ad Council’s Campaign for Freedom, “Priest, Rabbi and Imam,” “The President” and “We Have Nothing to Eat.”

Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett in Chicago advanced with four ads from its Altoids Strips campaign, “Goth Girl,” “So Small,” “Nerd” and “Mother Pucker,” which show characters with the strips and are illustrated in a comic-strip style by graphic artist Charles Burns. Burnett also garnered nods for three executions from its U.S. Army recruitment campaign, “Gondola,” “Wall” and “Banner,” in the public awareness messages category. “Wall” and “Banner” also received a second nod in the ambient category.

Publicis Groupe’s Publicis in New York and Havas’ Arnold in Boston each placed five entries on the shortlist. Publicis’ contenders include three for Stolichnaya vodka, “Living Room,” “Music Room” and “Rec Room,” and two for Vespa scooters, “London” and “New York.” Arnold’s finalists are: one Volkswagen Touareg execution, “Trailer,” which shows a Touareg pulling a trailer; and four ads from the American Legacy Foundation’s “Truth” campaign, “Prison,” “Snow,” “Pier” and “Surf,” co-produced with MDC Partners’ Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami. CP+B also made the list with two ads for Borders Bookstore, “Book Wrapping Paper” and “DVD Wrapping Paper,” which featured pull-out Borders-branded wrapping paper, as well as one execution for BMW Mini, “Unnecessary Headline.”

Publicis-backed Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York is in contention with four executions for Axe deodorant body spray: “Video Store,” “Lingerie,” “Inspiration Point” and “Axe Handbook.”

Other U.S. agencies on the shortlist are: Wieden + Kennedy in New York for three U.S. Trust ads; La Comunidad in Miami for three Rolling Stone ads; Publicis’ Fallon in Minneapolis for a Time ad and The One Show program; Havas’ McKinney + Silver in Raleigh, N.C., for two ads for La Leche League; Publicis Groupe’s Publicis in Seattle for two Washington Lottery ads; Zimmerman Partners Advertising in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for two Florida Marlins ads; davidandgoliath in Los Angeles for Kia Motors; DeVito/Verdi in New York for Mount Sinai Medical Center; Omnicom’s BBDO in Atlanta for Save the Children; Swope/Levy in Sausalito, Calif., for Zap Electric Vehicles; Publicis’ Saatchi & Saatchi in New York for Pampers Easy Up Diapers; and WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam in New York for Missouri Historical Society/Ad Council.
