Sybase Splitting With Hill, Holliday

SAN FRANCISCO Sybase is ending its run with Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos.

The database software company in Dublin, Calif., confirmed on Friday that it has sent the San Francisco office of the Interpublic Group shop a letter of intent to terminate the relationship, which will end in about 90 days.

“The reason we terminated is not because we were unhappy with the quality of the work,” said Pamela George, Sybase svp, corporate affairs. “We decided not to do any more print advertising for the remainder of the year” and did not wish to keep the agency on retainer, she said. “Economic concerns have caused us to re-evaluate our spending on marketing,” she said.

Last year, Sybase spent $4 million on advertising, according to CMR, down from $8 million in 2001. Agency officials could not be reached for comment.

George said the company will continue doing online advertising for the foreseeable future and will continue to use the online creative work Hill, Holliday has already developed for the company.

Sybase has worked with Hill, Holliday since the shop’s acquisition of Goldberg Moser O’Neill in 2000.
