Clever marketing or blog payola? Sprint Nextel is assessing a recent promotion in which it tried to get free publicity in the blogosphere by giving top bloggers free phones and service.

The Sprint Ambassadors Program, launched in January, was designed to promote Sprint’s Power Vision network, which launched last fall with no advertising. Instead, Sprint asked high-profile bloggers if they wanted to take part.

Those who agreed got six months of free Power Vision service and a free Samsung 8920 phone.
