Sorenstam Drives Traffic to PGA Site

NEW YORK Annika Sorenstam’s decision to play in the Bank of America Colonial golf tournament two weeks ago led to a significant traffic boost to the PGA Tour Web site, according to the latest report from Nielsen/NetRatings.

As the first female golfer to participate in a men’s tournament since 1945, Sorenstam ranked as one of the most popular players on the PGA site, with nearly 40 percent of the surfers logging on from home accessing her scorecard the week ending May 25. By comparison, the second most accessed scorecard the week of the tournament belonged to Phil Mickelson and drew 10 percent of audience traffic, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

The New York-based Internet measurement firm also found that traffic from home to jumped 101 percent to 369,000 unique visitors the week ending May 25, versus 184,000 the previous week. And more than 677,000 office workers visited the site that week, a 70 percent increase over 398,000 the week before.

Though the Stockholm, Sweden-born Sorenstam missed the cut by four strokes, shooting 71-74 for a 145 total, her “decision to play in the Colonial tournament drew Web surfers online during a generally quieter media golf event,” said Greg Bloom, senior Internet analyst for Nielsen/NetRatings, which is partly owned by Adweek parent VNU.
