Senator Calls for Gmail to Obtain User Consent

NEW YORK California State Senator Liz Figueroa this week introduced a bill that calls for Google to obtain the consent of e-mail subscribers before its technology scans messages for the purpose of placing ads.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based search company is currently testing Gmail, a new Web mail service that serves contextually targeted ads alongside messages. In an automated process, computers process the text and match it to ads or related information in Google’s database.

Figueroa’s bill, SB 1822, would forbid the review of e-mail content unless Google or any other Web mail provider first receives the approval of all parties to the electronic conversation.
