After threatening to fall below the 10,000 mark, the Dow Jones industrial average edged higher to close at 10,218, ending a turbulent week up 33 points. General Electric helped blue chips on Friday, gaining 2.2 percent after Merrill Lynch added the company to its list of top stock picks. The University of Michigan’s consumer-confidence index rose slightly from 94.4 in February to 95.8 in March, beating economists’ expectations of a dip and adding to Friday’s gains.
