Richards Group Wins Comdisco

Comdisco, a high-tech services company based in the Chicago area, has hired The Richards Group here for its reported $10 million advertising account.
Mary Moster, vice president of corporate communications at Comdisco, confirmed the selection last week.
She would not disclose other agencies that pitched the account, but published reports stated TFA/Leo Burnett Technology Group in Chicago was one of the finalists.
“We’re looking for Richards to produce a full branding program for us,” said Moster, who indicated the company went through an “exhaustive” list of agencies before selecting finalists this month.
Richards officials could not be reached for comment.
The Dallas agency’s assignment would primarily involve trade-oriented marketing to organizations that would utilize the Rosemont, Ill., company’s equipment leasing services for information, medical and semiconductor technology.
The publicly traded, $3.4 billion company’s leasing accounts make up 75 percent of sales. According to Hoover’s Online, the firm also provides asset management, network maintenance and services like computer backup systems. Comdisco has undergone a major expansion program since 1995 to add computer network consulting capabilities.
Moster said it was “too early” to speculate on the 30-year-old company’s media plans for the remainder of 1999.
Comdisco states it serves more than 8,000 customers in North and South America, Europe, the Pacific Rim, and Australia.
The Richards Group, which has increased its total billings to $385 million, has had a fast start to the year. It clinched account wins for Travelocity, Excel Communications, ClubCorp spas and resorts and FlashNet Communications through early March. The shop came up short in bids to win the accounts of Porsche Cars of North America and J.C. Penney’s Arizona Jean Co. in February.
