QUOTE UNQUOTE: On Canned Milk, Decadence and Other Matters

Advertising people are nothing if not quotable, so it’s no surprise that several agency heavyweights are among those cited in The Executive’s Book of Quotations, forthcoming from Oxford University Press. It’s also no surprise that David Ogilvy has the lion’s share of ad-oriented citations, including a jingle he attributes to an anonymous dairy farmer: ‘Carnation milk is the best in the land;/ Here I sit with my can in my hand – /No tits to pull, no hay to pitch,/ You just punch a hole in the son-of-a-bitch.’ Donny Deutsch wins mention for a slogan his agency used on behalf of British Knights: ‘Your mother wears Nike.’ Among other agency folk, Jerry Della Femina is quoted twice (including once on his affection for the name ‘Euro Jerry’) while Pat Fallon and Lois Wyse get one citation apiece. And there’s this 1986 bon mot from Alvin Chereskin: ‘I don’t think decadence is wrong. I think it’s kind of kicky and cute.’
