Ogilvy Advances Key Planning Execs

NEW YORK Ogilvy & Mather has established a global leadership structure for strategic planning by promoting its top planners in North America, Europe and Asia.

Colin Mitchell and John Shaw have become joint worldwide planning directors and Tim Broadbent is now global effectiveness director. Each reports to worldwide CEO Miles Young.

Previously, the New York-based Mitchell was chief strategic officer for North America and Shaw was group planning director for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, out of London. Broadbent was planning director for the Asia-Pacific region in Beijing.

The WPP Group shop has not had a global planning chief since 2004, when Tony Wright left to become worldwide CEO of Interpublic Group’s Lowe. Wright, now Lowe’s worldwide chairman, had been worldwide chief strategy officer at Ogilvy.

Young described Mitchell and Shaw as “dynamic and dashing thinkers,” adding “their task is to create industry-leading capabilities around the world for us and our clients.”

Mitchell, 41, joined Ogilvy in 1999 as lead planner on the IBM account and has worked with most of the shop’s clients, including BP and Cisco. He assumed his North American role in 2004.

Shaw, 49, has been at Ogilvy since 2003, when he became a regional planning director in Hong Kong. He shifted to the London office in 2006.

Mitchell and Shaw will lead a global planning council and work with Broadbent to emphasize effectiveness. They’ll continue to be based in N.Y., London and Beijing, respectively.
