Motorola Cuts Contender List

The competition for Motorola’s review of its $40 million consolidated account has thinned, according to sources.

BBDO West in Los Angeles and DDB Needham in Chicago have withdrawn from contention. In addition, McCann-Erickson in Atlanta, the incumbent on the paging systems business, declined the invitation to participate, said sources. One incumbent, Foote, Cone & Belding in Chicago, was eliminated, sources said.

Cliff Freeman and Partners in New York, identified earlier as a contender by sources, was never involved in the review.

Still in contention are the other incumbent, J. Walter Thompson, and Leo Burnett, both in Chicago. One other undisclosed shop may also be involved. Motorola executives declined to comment. –Scott Hume
