In his new book, Bruce Turkel, a seminal figure in South Florida’s advertising community, traces the cultural, historical, social and ethnic influences that have transformed Miami into a leading center of graphic design.
“New Design: Miami” (Rockport Publishers, 208 pages) deconstructs the work of 20 of the city’s top graphic design firms into a seething creative stew (Turkel prefers “bouillabaisse”), flavored by the city’s music, food, architecture, languages, politics and religion.
From digital design to work derived from more traditional palettes, Turkel uses simple prose and memorable illustrations to capture the graphic essence of the city.
“Life in Miami is brighter, bolder and spicier than in other American cities,” Turkel writes.
