Mervyn’s Adds WongDoody to Agency Roster

LOS ANGELES Mervyn’s Department Stores has tapped WongDoody to handle television creative projects, the shop said.

The independent agency was selected without a review. Mervyn’s works with a number of agencies on a project basis, including independents Ron Foth Advertising in Columbus, Ohio, and Venables, Bell & Partners in San Francisco; and Dentsu’s Colby & Partners in Santa Monica, Calif. Haworth Marketing & Media Co. in Minneapolis handles Mervyn’s media.

“Their business is so fast-paced, they’re always on the lookout for new ideas,” said Ben Wiener, CEO of WongDoody in Los Angeles.

WongDoody will work on the account from its Seattle and Los Angeles offices, with account management handled out of L.A.

Billings could not be determined. The Hayward, Calif.-based department store chain, a division of Target Corp., spent more than $105 million on ads in 2003, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

WongDoody’s first work for Mervyn’s, touting a one-day sale, is slated to break April 19. The shop is also working on ads centered on Memorial Day and other holidays, back-to-school sales, and product categories like jewelry and lingerie.

WongDoody, which claims 70 employees and more than $75 million in billings, also works with clients including Alaska Airlines, Clif Bar, Alpine Electronics and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
