McCann Promotes Gruhler to Account Chief

NEW YORK Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson said it has promoted group managing director C. Thomas Gruhler to director of account management, replacing Lori Senecal, who left earlier this month for Omnicom Group’s DDB.

In his new role, Gruhler will report to Brett Gosper, who last month returned to the agency from TBWA\Chiat\Day as president of McCann Erickson USA.

Gruhler, 36, has been spearheading the agency’s $300-400 million Verizon Wireless account since 2002. He will continue to do so as he assumes his new responsibilities of managing a 150-person staff, budgets and resources, as well as participate in career development programs at the New York agency.

In a statement, Gosper said, “On Verizon Wireless, Thom has demonstrated the type of leadership and collaboration that I see as key to this critical agency role. He and I are completely aligned on our vision for this role, including ensuring a contemporary approach to brands that involves an understanding of the full communications environment and an ability to leverage McCann Worldgroup resources to deliver a central demand idea.”

And while Senecal also ran the agency’s Tag youth and buzz marketing unit, her former partner, ecd Craig Markus, now leads that group, and Gruhler will work closely with it.

During his career, Gruhler has worked on accounts such as Chevrolet, DaimlerChrysler, Hilton and Salomon Smith Barney.

McCann Erickson New York’s other clients include Wendy’s, Kohl’s, L’Oreal, Bass Ale, Johnson & Johnson and MasterCard.
