Kaplan, Kirshenbaum Win Conn. Casinos

BOSTON Foxwoods Resort & Casino and Mohegan Sun each made agency decisions on Friday, tapping The Kaplan Thaler Group and Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners for their respective ad accounts. Each casino plans to spend about $25 million on ads this year.

The Mohegan Sun assignment includes strategic and creative development, media planning and oversight of media buying partners for the Uncasville, Conn., casino. Mohegan Sun chose MDC Partners-backed Kirshenbaum of New York following presentations from incumbent Cliff Freeman and Partners and Bartle Bogle Hegarty, both in New York, and Mullen in Wenham, Mass.

George Galinsky, vice president of advertising and public relations at Mohegan Sun, in a statement praised Kirshenbaum’s “compelling strategic platform” and “exciting creative product.”

Independent Mintz & Hoke in Avon, Conn., continues to handle media buying and smaller segments of Mohegan Sun’s business that were not in play. Select Resources International of Santa Monica, Calif., managed the review.

Publicis Groupe’s Kaplan Thaler in New York won creative chores Foxwoods’ account in a shootout with Havas-owned Arnold in Boston. The Mashantucket, Conn.-based client’ had worked with Trahan, Burden & Charles in Baltimore on creative. Horizon Media continues to handle buying and planning.

Martin Kramer, director of advertising for Foxwoods, said in a statement that Kaplan Thaler “demonstrated a strong creative edge and an understanding of our brand.”
