Gillette Taps MindShare for Media

LOS ANGELES—WPP Group’s MindShare in New York has been selected to handle Gillette’s $400-500 million consolidated global media planning and buying account. MindShare prevailed over the New York-based offices of the two incumbents: Omnicom Group’s OMD, which handled Boston-based Gillette’s media in North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand; and Interpublic Group’s Universal McCann, which handled media in the rest of the world. (In Japan, media for Gillette’s Braun brand will continue to be handled by Dentsu.)

Mullen, 3 Others in Finals

BOSTON—IPG’s Mullen is among four agencies preparing to make final presentations next month to online-dating service in the review for the client’s $20 million creative and media account. Along with the Wenham, Mass.-based shop, the finalists are DDB in Dallas and Chicago; Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco; and Publicis in the West in Seattle, confirmed Select Resources International in West Hollywood, Calif., which is leading the search. Shops not advancing include Arnold in Boston; Berlin Cameron/Red Cell in New York; GSD&M in Austin, Texas; and Ground Zero in Marina del Rey, Calif. Launch Partnership in Irving, Texas, which has handled projects for the Richardson, Texas-based client, decided not to participate, sources said [Adweek, Sept. 23].

Gregory Dobos Joins MediaConcepts as CD

BOSTON—MediaConcepts has named Gregory Dobos creative director. In his new capacity, he will lead the company’s creative staff and work directly with a variety of clients. Prior to joining MediaConcepts in Assonet, Mass., Dobos served as a vp at Digitas in Boston. During his career, Dobos has worked with clients such as American Express, AT&T, General Motors and IBM.

Jerry Stiller Stars in New American Sportsman Ads

ATLANTA—Launching a remake of The American Sports man—the former ABC fishing and hunting show hosted by Curt Gowdy—is a challenge at a time when a significant portion of the viewing audience would recoil in horror at the notion that shooting a bull elephant represents sportsmanlike behavior. BaylessCronin’s TV effort for ESPN2’s New American Sportsman overcomes that charge with humor in two spots featuring veteran curmudgeon Jerry Stiller, who appears as a blood-and-guts outdoorsman shocked at the new show’s political correctness.

Energy concern KeySpan is reviewing its ad account, and incumbent Earle Palmer Brown in New York is defending, a client representative said. Spending has been $3-5 million. … Arnold has been named in Working Mothers’ annual list of 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers, the only ad agency to do so. The magazine cited the Boston-based agency’s high percentage of women in executive roles, generous maternity leave and flexible scheduling options as key factors in its decision. … Partners & Simons is launching a multimedia campaign for The Mary Baker Eddy Library, named for the founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Newspaper, radio, transit and outdoor ads use the line, “For the betterment of humanity.”
