JWT Retains and Grows Sun Business

NEW YORK—San Francisco’s JWT & Tonic has retained creative duties on Sun Microsystems’ U.S. account, and the client plans to expand its relationship with J. Walter Thompson to include ad duties in Europe and Asia, sources said. Sun spends about $100 million globally on advertising. Sun’s decision came after a review that included Leagas Delaney in San Francisco and Fallon in Minneapolis. In the end, the contest was between Fallon and JWT, according to sources. Also, to better reflect the global relationship with Sun, JWT is considering dropping Tonic from the name of the San Francisco shop, said sources. Global media duties were consolidated at Starcom in Chicago earlier this year.

IHOP Picks Universal McCann for Network Buying

LOS ANGELES—Interpublic Group’s Universal McCann here won restaurant chain International House of Pancakes’ review for its first national media campaign, said IHOP rep Patrick Lenow. The shop prevailed in the final round over sister IPG network Initiative Media and independent Horizon Media, both in L.A., sources said. Horizon is lead agency on IHOP’s $30 million spot media account. Universal McCann sibling McCann-Erickson, Los Angeles, handles creative for IHOP, based in Glendale, Calif.

Novell Search on Hold, May Be Scuttled

BOSTON—Novell’s review for its estimated $30 million account has ground to a halt, and a company rep said it could be scrapped altogether. Four finalists—incumbent SicolaMartin, Austin, Texas, pitching with Young & Rubicam, New York; J. Walter Thompson, New York; Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston; and Mullen, Wenham, Mass.—made presentations to the Orem, Utah-based software provider more than six weeks ago, according to sources. Disagreements at the client over marketing budgets and strategy have caused the delay, sources said.

Match.com Cut Expected

LOS ANGELES—Agencies awaiting a cut this week in the review for Match.com’s estimated $20 million creative and media account include: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco; Ground Zero, Marina del Rey, Calif.; Publicis in the West, Seattle; Arnold, Boston; Berlin Cameron/Red Cell, New York; DDB, Dallas; GSD&M, Austin, Texas; and Mullen, Wenham, Mass., sources said. Launch Partnership, Irving, Texas, which has handled projects for Match.com, is not participating, sources said. The client, based in Richardson, Texas, is expected to cut to three or four finalists. The review is being led by Select Resources International, West Hollywood, Calif.

SKG Wins $10 Mil. Borgata Casino Account

LOS ANGELES—Schadler Kramer Group has been hired without a review to launch the Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa. Billings are estimated at $10 million. Borgata will be the first casino to open in Atlantic City in 13 years when it debuts next summer. The Las Vegas shop will handle brand development, strategic planning, media placement and collateral and design. A regional employee-recruitment effort will break Sept. 29, followed by consumer work next spring.
