California Lottery Selects FCB

LOS ANGELES—The California Lottery has named Foote, Cone & Belding in San Francisco as the successful bidder in the review for its five-year, $125 million advertising account, a lottery representative said. FCB pitched with Initiative Media, Los Angeles, which will handle media buying. Finalists also included three Los Angeles agencies: incumbent Grey, DDB and McCann-Erickson. This was the second review conducted by the lottery this year. DDB had been named the successful bidder in a review that concluded in January. How ever, following protests by Grey, the account was put back in review.

Deutsch to Use Candid Camera for Burger King

LOS ANGELES—Deutsch/LA in Marina del Rey, Calif., is in pre-production on new Burger King spots that will use a reality-TV approach, the agency said. Plans call for a “talking drive-through menu board” to be placed in unlikely spots and engage passersby with questions and comments. The voice will be provided by Adam Carolla, co-host of Comedy Central’s The Man Show. The commercials are expected to break before the end of the month as part of a $50 million assignment given to Deutsch in May.

Inter/Media Names Wald for Ditech.com

LOS ANGELES—Donna Wald has joined Inter/Media Advertising as senior vice president, account director and will work on the Ditech.com account, the agency said. Wald most recently served as executive vice president, group account director at Initiative Media in Los Angeles. During her 15 years at Initiative, Wald worked on such accounts as Disney, Bally Total Fitness and Baskin-Robbins. Inter/Media president Robert Yallen described the hire as a “tremendous coup” for his Encino, Calif., agency.

Novell Decision Imminent

BOSTON—Novell has heard presentations from the four contenders pitching its $30 million U.S. ad account, and a decision by the Orem, Utah, client is set for this week or next, sources said. Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos in Boston, Mullen in Wenham, Mass., J. Walter Thompson in New York and the team of Young & Rubicam, New York, and incumbent SicolaMartin, Austin, Texas, are the finalists, sources said.

Onward and Upward

Heil-Brice Retail Advertising hired Michael Rutherford, formerly of TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif., as associate creative director and former Italia/Gal vice president of strategic planning Sandy Miller as director of account planning and research. The Newport Beach, Calif., shop also added Lisa Lahr as account director on the Los Angeles Times business and hired former House2Home vice president of marketing Beverly Day to direct the shop’s Factory 2-U account. … Hispanic ad agency La Agencia de Orcí & Asociados in Los Angeles promoted Juan José Quintana to senior vice president, executive creative director, a new position. Quintana, who joined the shop in 1989, has worked on campaigns for such clients as Honda, Pepsi and KFC.
