Martin Chews on Lender’s Project From Kellogg
ATLANTA–The Martin Agency, which broke into Kellogg’s agency roster late last year, has been tapped to work on a project for the company’s Lender’s bagels brand, a Kellogg official confirmed. A Lender’s official said the Richmond, Va., agency’s assignment would have no immediate effect on the brand’s lead agency, J. Walter Thompson in Chicago. Ad spending for the brand was $11 million last year, down 19 percent from 1997, according to Competitive Media Reporting.
Taking Illinois’ Lead, Indiana Dealers Sue GM
DETROIT–Several General Motors dealers in Indiana last week filed a class-action lawsuit against the automaker and its new marketing plan, which took effect April 1. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis, alleges GM is illegally using money collected from the dealers to advertise in other parts of the country. In Illinois, 60 dealers have filed a similar complaint. Both sides in that case will reconvene before the judge on Friday.

CHICAGO–TFA/Leo Burnett Technology Group has named Jamie Pfaff chief creative officer. Pfaff, who has been with Burnett since 1980, was most recently executive creative director of Leo Burnett Greater China. In his new position, Pfaff will supervise creative direction for the high-tech specialist agency’s offices in Chicago, Boston and Austin, Texas.
Gart Selects Carat ICG for Media Buying
CHICAGO–Gart Sports Co., Denver, awarded its $8-10 million media buying account to Carat ICG in Los Angeles, company officials said. The Denver-based sporting goods retailer is still deciding between Leo Burnett, Chicago, O2 Ideas, Birmingham, Ala., and Fogarty Klein & Partners, Houston, for a broadcast project.
The Wolf Group Eats Up Grand
CHICAGO–The Wolf Group, headquartered in Toronto, has acquired the Grand Group, a promotions agency here whose clients include Old Navy, Jim Beam, Kraft Foods and Bank One.
Sammy Slams for Kmart CHICAGO–Cubs star Sammy Sosa makes a cameo in a new spot for Kmart Corp. In the spot, created by Minneapolis agency Campbell Mithun Esty, Sosa calls the Troy, Mich., retailer’s Big Kmart stores “a home run.” The spot broke over the weekend.
District Addys Awarded
DETROIT–In the Addys sixth district, Hanon McKendry’s Compass Arts subsidiary in Grand Rapids, Mich., received the Best of Show broadcast award, while Publicis, Indianapolis, won Best of Show for print. Of the 44 first-place Addys, Campbell-Ewald Advertising, Warren, Mich., received the most, a total of five, for its Chevrolet work.
